Lower Prep

The girls in the Lower Prep are taught principally by their form teachers, with specialist teachers for music, drama, P.E. and ballet.  We believe that a curriculum structured around a single form teacher allows the sort of flexibility which is essential for the teaching of younger children.

Teaching in this section of the school is based on an imaginative and stimulating curriculum developed in-house, designed around the use of creative teaching to promote the childrens' knowledge and understanding, as well as basic skills.  The girls receive a thorough grounding in Maths and English, which is essential for their good progress in these subjects further up the school, but they also enjoy a curriculum rich in Science, the Arts and Humanities.

One of the major benefits of the form teacher approach is that many subjects can be taught in the Lower Prep in a cross-curricular manner..

Another feature of the Lower prep curriculum is an emphasis on learning outside the classroom, both through organised school trips and also in using the 'outdoor classroom' provided by the extensive, beautiful and safe school grounds.

Experience has proven that this approach to the curriculum enhances the girls' enjoyment of school and their happiness and well-being, and promotes the curiosity and imagination which are natural in this age group, but which need nurturing and encouragement to continue and to grow.

The Independent Schools' Inspectorate recognised the success of this approach in commending the 'outstanding teaching' in our Lower Prep, as well as observing that 'the children achieve outstandingly well'.
